Fred Van Wickln, via 8 Nov 05 email provided the following information about Paul J. Van Wicklin's military service in the civil war. Paul Van Wicklin's civil war unit was the 36th Illinois Infantry, Co. K. Since he enlisted 23 September 1861 from Huntley, McHenry Co, IL he probably fought at Pea Ridge, AR (a Union victory that kept Missouri in the Union), Perryville (Chaplin Hills, KY), Stone's River (Murfreesboro, TN), and Tullahoma, TN (battle for Chattanooga, TN). He must have been wounded during the battle of Chickamauga, GA because he was discharged for wounds, August 25, 1863 and Chickamunga took place August 16 through September 22, 1863. Chickamanga was a defeat for the Union army and they fell back to Chattanooga to regroup. Pvt. Paul J. Van Wicklin was under General Sheridan who was under Gen. McCook, at this time. 1864 Marriage. His physician was N.C. Collins of South Elgin, IL and the undertaker was Thornburg and Sudel. He was born in Cramahe Twp, Can. West about Aug/Sept 1831. His parents are Cornelius and Anna (Merretts) Van Wicklin. NY (NY, NY), own income. 1913 Obituary information from Elgin Daily News (Friday, 2 May 1913 and Elgin Daily Courier of same date) provides the following information on Nancy J. Van Wicklin. died in Fountain Square, Elgin, IL on 1 May 1913 at 4:58PM at age 72. She was run down and almost instantly killed by an automobile (owned and driven by Dr. Katherine Pleavin; other passenger in car was her instructor in motoring, Otto G. Elfring). Drivers were cleared of blame since Nancy stepped off the curb into the parth of the car without looking. The horn was continually tooted going through Fountain Square. A man who saw the front wheel pull her under the vehicle tried to grab her clothing and pull her from under the vehicle before the back wheels ran over her but he was unsuccessful in his attempt. At the time, Nancy was a widow, and had been living for the past 13 years at 479 Charles St., Elgin, IL with her son, John G. Van Wicklin. Nancy was b. 14 May 1840, Lawrence County, NY, the dau. of Mr. and Mrs. John Putney. At the time of her death she was survived by her son, John of Elgin, IL, a grandson, Paul of Elgin, IL, a brother, Zach Putney of Portland, OR. She was a member of the First M.E. John Grant Van Wicklin died 1 June 1945 at age 80 after several months of failing health. He died in his home at 2 Jackson St., Elgin, IL. He was married to Grace Laura Aldridge on 20 June 1900 in Elgin, IL. John was a pioneer in the development of a northeastern Illinois molding sand and mining industry for steel founders in the Chicago area. At one time John leased and owned pits supplying some of the largest steel fabrication firms in the midwest. He was b. 15 Sept 1864, the son of Paul J. and Nancy [Putney] Van Wicklin and resided in Illinois his entire life. He was a member of Elgin Lodge 117, AF and AM; Loyal L. Munn chapter, R&SM; Bethel commandery, Knights Templar, and Tebala temple of the Shrine, in Rockford. He was also a member of the YMCA. Grace Laura [Aldridge] Van Wicklin died 27 Feb 1959 in her home at 2 South Jackson St, Elgin, IL at age 84 after a lingering illness. She married John Grant Van Wicklin on 20 June 1900 in Elgin, IL. Preceding her in death were her husband, John G. Van Wicklin, her brother Charles Aldridge, and two sisters, Mrs Emma Lindoefer and Jessie Aldridge. She is survived by her son, Paul A. Van Wicklin (of Elgin) married to Mona C. Van Wicklin, a brother Mort S. Aldridge of Elgin, a sister Mrs. Harry Florence Lydick of Fort Wayne, IN, and two nephews (Mortimer Aldridge Jr., Harold Aldridge). Burial at Lake Street Memorial Park, Elgin, IL.
